Short answer: if your layover is under about 5 hours, stay inside DXB. From about 5 hours you can leave the airport for a short private tour, and every extra hour adds another layer of the city: souks and the creek first, then the Burj Khalifa and Downtown, then the coast, the Palm and an attraction visit. Our private layover tours run from 2 hours ($140) to 10 hours ($460) for one traveller, plus $10 for each extra traveller, with pickup and drop-off at your DXB terminal.
Dubai International (DXB) is unusually close to the sights. Typical off-peak drive times from the airport are about 10 minutes to the Gold Souk and Deira, 12 minutes to Al Fahidi and Dubai Creek or the Dubai Frame, 15 minutes to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, 25 minutes to the Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach, and 30 minutes to the Palm and Dubai Marina. That's why a layover that would be wasted in most cities can turn into a real look at Dubai. The question is simply how much time you have, and how much of it you can spend outside.
First: how much of your layover is really free?
Your layover is not your tour time. Before you can leave the airport you need to land, get off the plane, clear passport control and walk out to arrivals. At the end, you need to get back, check in or go through the transfer process, pass security and reach your gate. Traffic matters too.
As a rough guide, keep about 3 hours of your layover for the airport at both ends, and use the rest for the city. The table below shows what that means in practice. Treat it as a starting point, not a promise: your terminal, the time of day, whether you have checked bags and your airline's check-in rules all change the numbers. Send us your flight details and we'll tell you which tour length is safe.
| Your layover | Tour length that usually fits | From (1 traveller) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 hours | Stay in the airport | – |
| About 5–6 hours | 2-hour tour | $140 |
| About 6–7 hours | 3-hour tour | $180 |
| About 7–8 hours | 4-hour tour | $220 |
| About 8–9 hours | 5-hour tour | $260 |
| About 9–10 hours | 6-hour tour | $300 |
| About 10–11 hours | 7-hour tour | $340 |
| About 11–12 hours | 8-hour tour | $380 |
| About 12–13 hours | 9-hour tour | $420 |
| 13 hours or more | 10-hour tour | $460 |
Prices are for the whole private tour with one traveller; each additional traveller adds $10. They include the private vehicle, a licensed English-speaking driver-guide, fuel, Salik tolls and parking, and airport pickup and drop-off.
Under 5 hours: make the most of DXB
With less than about 5 hours, leaving the airport usually isn't worth the stress. You'd spend most of your time in queues and in the car. Instead, find a lounge, a shower or a quiet place to sleep, and eat properly before your next flight. Our guide to DXB lounges covers the options.
5 to 6 hours: one side of the city
A 2-hour tour is short, so you choose one side of Dubai:
- Old Dubai: Al Fahidi Historical District, an abra boat across Dubai Creek, and the Gold and Spice Souks. This is the closest and most atmospheric option.
- New Dubai: a photo stop at Zabeel Palace, the Dubai Frame, the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, and the Dubai Fountain.
It's a quick taste, but it's real Dubai rather than a terminal shop. If you have a little more time, the 3-hour tour combines both: the souks and the creek, then the Dubai Frame, the Burj Khalifa and a photo stop at the Museum of the Future.
7 to 8 hours: the classic Dubai tour
This is the sweet spot for first-time visitors. A 4-hour tour covers the essentials without rushing: Al Fahidi and the abra crossing, the Gold and Spice Souks, a drive past Jumeirah Mosque, a Dubai Frame photo stop, the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, and the Dubai Fountain if the show times line up.
With an hour more, the 5-hour tour adds the coast: a photo stop at the Burj Al Arab, a drive on Palm Jumeirah to Atlantis, and a walk along the Dubai Marina waterfront.
9 to 10 hours: add an attraction visit
Our most popular option is the 6-hour tour. It includes everything on the 5-hour route, plus one attraction visit of your choice and time for coffee and photo stops. You can pick from:
- Burj Khalifa "At the Top"
- the Dubai Frame sky deck
- the Museum of the Future
- The View at The Palm
Attraction tickets aren't included in the tour price. We arrange them for you and you pay the official rate. The tour can also be timed for the Dubai Fountain show.
10 to 12 hours: beach time and a proper meal
With a long daytime layover, you can stop feeling like you're in transit. The 7-hour tour adds a break at Jumeirah Beach, Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai, and a relaxed café or lunch stop. The 8-hour tour goes deeper into Deira's souks and the Dubai Creek waterfront, includes a sit-down lunch or dinner stop and can include a second attraction visit.
12 hours or more: a full Dubai day
A 9-hour tour includes two attraction visits, longer beach time and, in the evening, the fountain and skyline lights. The 10-hour tour is the complete version, with unhurried meal stops and an optional desert safari add-on, so you see the skyline, the souks, the sea and the dunes in one layover.
If your layover runs well past a day, you'll probably need a hotel, and possibly a different visa. Ask us before you book a tour.
Night layovers
Tours run around the clock, so a late-night or early-morning layover isn't a problem. The city looks very different after dark: the skyline is lit up, the roads are quieter, and the Dubai Fountain runs its evening shows. Some souks and attractions close at night, so we plan the route around opening hours. Read our after-midnight layover guide for ideas.
Before you book: visa, luggage and money
- Visa. You must be allowed to enter the UAE to leave the airport. Many nationalities can enter visa-free or get a visa on arrival, and some airlines arrange transit visas. Rules depend on your passport, so check yours, or send us your nationality and flights and we'll point you to the right option. Visa fees are not included in the tour price.
- Luggage. Your carry-on bags can stay locked in your private vehicle during the tour. Our luggage storage guide covers the alternatives.
- What's not included. Attraction tickets (paid at official rates), meals and drinks outside the vehicle, shopping and visa fees. Gratuity is entirely optional.
- Dress. Light clothes are fine for most of the city. Cover shoulders and knees if you might visit a mosque or a traditional area.
How the tour works
- Book online on our booking form: choose your tour length and number of travellers, then pay by card. You get an instant email confirmation after payment.
- Meet your guide in the arrivals hall of DXB Terminal 1, 2 or 3. They'll be holding a name board. We track your flight, so a delay doesn't leave you stranded.
- See Dubai in a private, air-conditioned car with only your group. Your guide adjusts the route to your interests, traffic and opening hours.
- Get dropped at your departure terminal with a safety buffer built in. Being on time is the whole point of the service.
