Short answer: Dubai International (DXB) doesn't publish one minimum connection time for the whole airport. Your airline sets it, and if both flights are on one ticket, the connection you were sold already meets that airline's minimum. As a planning guide from the airlines' own pages (checked 14 October 2026): moving between Emirates' Concourses A, B and C takes about 30 minutes, flydubai publishes a 120-minute minimum for Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 connections, and on separate tickets you should allow at least 3 hours, because you'll go through passport control, collect your bags and check in again.
Most connection questions about Dubai come down to three things: whether you're on one ticket or two, which terminals you land at and leave from, and whether your bags are checked through. Get those three right and you'll know whether 75 minutes is comfortable or risky.
Step 1: one ticket or separate tickets?
This matters more than anything else.
One ticket (one booking reference covering both flights). The airline has agreed to get you and your bags from one flight to the next. You stay airside, follow the "Connections" signs, go through a transfer security check and walk, ride the train or take a bus to your next gate. If your first flight is late and you miss the second, the airline normally rebooks you.
Separate tickets (two bookings, often with two airlines). Nobody is responsible for your connection but you. In most cases you need to:
- Clear passport control (so you must be allowed to enter the UAE).
- Collect your bags from the carousel and pass customs.
- Get to your departure terminal, landside.
- Check in again, then go back through security and passport control.
Emirates tells passengers who need to collect bags and check in again to be through passport control and security 90 minutes before departure, and at the gate 60 minutes before in Economy or Premium Economy (45 minutes in First or Business). Work backwards from those deadlines and you'll see why a short connection on separate tickets rarely works.
Dubai Airports also notes that travellers on separate tickets who don't have a UAE visa can ask the marhaba transfer desk for a paid baggage transfer service. Emirates runs its own paid baggage transfer for separately booked flights, and it needs a connection of at least three hours. Check the current fee on the airline's page before you rely on it.
Step 2: where you land and where you leave
DXB has three passenger terminals, and the distance between them is the second biggest factor.
| Terminal | Gates | Who flies from it (per Dubai Airports) |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal 1 | D gates, reached by an airport train | Many international airlines |
| Terminal 2 | F gates | Regional and international flights, mainly flydubai |
| Terminal 3 | Concourses A, B and C | Emirates, plus selected flydubai, United and Air Canada flights |
Inside Terminal 3 you can walk between B and C, and take the airport train to A. Emirates says the move from one concourse to another takes approximately 30 minutes, and it runs a bus between Concourses A and C. Some flights also park on a remote stand away from the building, which adds a bus ride before you even reach the transfer area.
Terminal 2 is a separate building from Terminals 1 and 3, so connecting passengers go by connection bus: from Terminal 3 you catch it at Concourse A (bus area A6 for F gates), Concourse B (connections desk K for D and F gates) or Concourse C (connections desk E for F gates). flydubai's published minimum for a Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 connection is 120 minutes.
A connection that involves Dubai World Central (DWC, Al Maktoum) is a different airport about 60 km away. You clear passport control, collect your bags and travel by road. flydubai gives a minimum of 4 hours for that change.
How much time to allow: a planning table
These are planning guides built from the airlines' published rules above, not guarantees. Your airline's minimum for your exact itinerary always wins.
| Your connection | What you'll do at DXB | Comfortable time to allow |
|---|---|---|
| One ticket, Emirates to Emirates, same concourse | Transfer security, walk to the gate | Whatever the airline sold you; 90 minutes or more feels relaxed |
| One ticket, Emirates, different concourse (A to C) | Transfer security, train or bus between concourses (about 30 min) | 2 hours if you want time to spare |
| One ticket, Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 (flydubai and Emirates) | Connection bus between terminals | flydubai's minimum is 120 minutes |
| One ticket, Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 (another airline) | Connection bus to the D gates | Ask the airline; leave extra for the bus |
| Separate tickets, any terminals | Passport control, bags, customs, check in again | At least 3 hours; more at peak times |
| DXB to DWC (Al Maktoum) | Enter the UAE, road transfer, check in | flydubai says 4 hours minimum |
When a short connection gets risky
Even on one ticket, a few things eat into a tight connection:
- A late inbound flight. Connection times are based on the timetable, so a late landing shortens the time you really have.
- A remote stand. The bus from the aircraft to the terminal can add a noticeable chunk of time.
- A concourse or terminal change. Check your boarding pass for the gate letter as soon as you land.
- Busy hours. Dubai Airports calls DXB the world's busiest international airport, and transfer security can queue when several flights land together.
- No onward boarding pass. If you don't have one, you'll need the transfer or connections desk first.
- Special assistance. Meet-and-assist help is booked through your airline; Emirates asks for 48 hours' notice.
If the airline sold you the connection on one ticket and you miss it because the first flight was late, rebooking you is normally the airline's job. On separate tickets, it usually isn't.
Have more time than you need? Leaving the airport
If your gap is long, you might not want to sit at the gate. Whether you can walk out of DXB depends first on your passport, so read can you leave the airport on a Dubai transit visa? before you plan anything. On the timing side, keep roughly 3 hours of the gap for the airport at both ends, so a stop in the city starts to make sense from about 5 hours upwards. Our guide to what to do on a Dubai layover, by hours available shows what fits into each tour length.
When you book a private tour with us, we plan the drop-off time from your departure time, not from pickup, and your driver-guide meets you in arrivals at Terminal 1, 2 or 3. Tours run from 2 hours ($140) to 10 hours ($460) for one traveller, plus $10 for each extra traveller. Send us both flight numbers on WhatsApp and we'll tell you honestly whether your connection leaves room for a tour.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 hour enough for a connecting flight in Dubai?
It can be on one Emirates ticket within Terminal 3 if the airline sold you that connection, but it's tight if you change concourse, since Emirates says that move takes about 30 minutes. On separate tickets, one hour is not enough.
Is 2 hours enough for a connection at DXB?
On one ticket, usually yes, including a Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 transfer, where flydubai's published minimum is 120 minutes. On separate tickets, allow at least 3 hours.
What is the minimum connection time at Dubai airport?
There isn't one figure for the whole airport. Each airline sets its own minimum by route and terminal, and booking systems only sell one-ticket connections that meet it. flydubai, for example, publishes 120 minutes between Terminals 2 and 3.
Do I need to collect my bags on a connection in Dubai?
Not if both flights are on one ticket and your bags are checked through. On separate tickets you normally collect them, pass customs and check in again, unless you pay for a baggage transfer service.
Do I need a visa for a connecting flight in Dubai?
Not if you stay airside on one ticket. If you have to clear passport control, for example on separate tickets or to change to DWC, you must be allowed to enter the UAE.
How long does it take to get between terminals at DXB?
Emirates says about 30 minutes between its Concourses A, B and C. Terminal 2 is reached by connection bus, and flydubai's minimum for a Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 connection is 120 minutes.
How long a connection do I need to see Dubai?
As a rough guide, about 5 hours or more, and only if your passport lets you enter the UAE. Keep around 3 hours for the airport at both ends and use the rest for the city.
