Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip: what to see in one day

Updated 2026-10-20

Short answer: Abu Dhabi is about 130 km from Downtown Dubai, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours by road each way (longer in rush hour). That leaves enough time for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the palace of Qasr Al Watan, the Corniche and Emirates Palace in one long day. If you'd rather not deal with buses or taxis, our private Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai covers 8–10 hours with a driver-guide and pickup from your Dubai hotel, DXB or DWC.

How far is Abu Dhabi from Dubai?

Route planners put the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at about 128–131 km from Downtown Dubai via the E11, with a drive of around 1 hour 15 minutes in light traffic. Morning and evening rush hours can add 30 minutes or more. These are approximate times, so check a live map on the day.

What to see in one day

You won't see all of Abu Dhabi in a day, but these sights sit close enough together to combine:

  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The highlight of most visits. Open to visitors Saturday to Thursday 9:00 AM–8:30 PM, and Friday 9:00–11:30 AM and 2:30–8:30 PM (last entry 30 minutes before closing). Hours change during Ramadan.
  • Qasr Al Watan. The UAE's presidential palace, a working palace open to visitors with a ticket; you enter through its Visitor Centre.
  • Emirates Palace and the Corniche. The landmark palace hotel and Abu Dhabi's long waterfront promenade, good for photo stops.
  • Heritage Village. A look at traditional Emirati life.
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi. On Saadiyat Island, if you'd rather spend time on art. Galleries are open Monday to Thursday 10 AM–6:30 PM and Friday to Sunday 10 AM–8:30 PM.

A simple way to plan the day

  • Start early. You avoid the worst of the traffic and reach the mosque soon after it opens.
  • Check Fridays. The mosque closes to visitors between 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM on Fridays, so plan the palace or the Corniche for that gap.
  • Fit stops around opening hours rather than a fixed order. Qasr Al Watan and the Louvre are big visits in their own right, so most people pick one of the two.
  • Leave buffer for the drive back, especially in the evening rush.
  • Bring water for the car, not the mosque. Food and drinks, even water, aren't allowed inside the mosque, and photos are allowed only at the designated photo stops.
  • On a budget? The Louvre Abu Dhabi website describes a free Cultural Express shuttle from Dubai to the Louvre and Qasr Al Watan. Check its schedule there; it serves only those two stops.
  • Doing it yourself? Book the mosque visit online in advance, since the official rules say visits are confirmed only with prior booking.

What to wear

The Grand Mosque has a strict dress code. Women wear loose clothing down to the ankles with sleeves to the wrists and cover their hair fully. Men should preferably cover their legs fully and avoid transparent, tight or sleeveless tops. Visitors are also asked to avoid clothing with slogans, heavy makeup and vibrant colours (official Mosque Manners). Dressing for the mosque keeps you comfortable for the rest of the day too. Bring a light scarf and a layer: indoor air-conditioning is strong.
